Professional Endodontics Celebrates Root Canal Awareness Week by Educating our Patients

To ensure that our patients get the best quality dental care, we believe it is important to keep them informed of advances in modern endodontics and root canal treatment.

Just as a cardiologist focuses on saving the heart, an endodontist focuses on saving the natural teeth. One of the most common treatments involved in saving a person’s natural teeth is root canal treatment. Though this treatment is relatively quick and nearly painless nowadays, there is still a general fear that surrounds it. This is why we are teaming up with the American Association of Endodontists (AAE) to spread information during Root Canal Awareness Week from May 7th through May 13th. By spreading information, people will be willing to undergo root canal treatment and our objective as endodontists can be achieved more often.

Building a Case for Root Canal Treatment

For some people, the mention of root canal treatment sets off an alarm that triggers nerves causing fear and stress. This is problematic, considering that root canal treatment plays a significant role in retaining and maintaining the natural teeth. When patients opt for other treatments, or avoid treatment all together, they are most likely choosing a less functional substitution for their natural teeth or allowing the existing damage to grow.

The good news is that modern root canal treatment has evolved to point of being rather quick and painless. In fact, people who have never undergone the treatment are six times more likely to describe it as painful—proving that this impression of root canals is spread mostly by people who have never had them.

Modern advances in anesthetics and endodontic instrumentation have allowed specialists to provide root canal treatment in a careful and comfortable manner. With new and more precise methods for administering anesthetics, specialists can ensure that the affected area will be numb throughout the entire treatment process. Also, endodontic instrumentation has advanced, with more flexible materials in order to better form to the shape of the canal space. By doing so, the specialist does less damage to the surrounding tissue. Basically, this means that root canal treatment is almost as quick and painless as a routine dental check-up.

Finally, the alternative to root canal treatment is often tooth extraction followed by the installation of a dental implant. Though dental implants have come a long way, there is no tooth replacement that is equivalent in function and durability to the natural tooth. If there is one thing that all dentists and endodontists agree on, it is that retaining the natural tooth is always the best option.
