Dentists and endodontists are encouraged to support national, state, or local causes that promote high-quality accessible care.

The American Academy of Endodontics (AAE) and the American Dental Association (ADA) stand together in support of delivering quality oral health care to all individuals in need. Unfortunately, there are many significant challenges that make it difficult for some people to access quality oral care in the United States. In response to this problem, the AAE and the ADA have come together to promote awareness and action to support the need for more accessible dental care.

What Challenges Do Underserved Patients Face?

Because of the ever-changing political climate of the United States, many Federal programs that once provided dental care for underserved populations have been cut or reduced. Medicaid coverage cuts have only increased these problems. Although Federal law requires states to cover dental benefits for Medicaid patients, the reimbursement rates available through these programs do not often equal the costs. Consequently, patients are forced to forgo treatment or seek out affordable services that of low quality because of financial limitations.

What Can Be Done?

To address these concerns, the AAE and the ADA encourage dentists and endodontists to work together to educate the public on the need for regular preventative dental care. Furthermore, the AAE advocates for those in need by asking members to Step Up!   The Step Up initiative urges doctors to share their skills and expertise with the community by partnering with local agencies such as private programs, federal, state, and local health agencies, academic programs, and community programs that serve impoverished groups.

By sharing our skills, dentists and endodontists can make a positive impact on their communities and have a lasting effect on the wellbeing of individuals in need.

How to Get Involved

If you are interested in finding ways to spread awareness and offer your services, the AAE offers many ideas for ways to get involved. These may include:

  • Contacting the National Foundation for Dentistry for the Handicapped or other national dental organizations
  • Volunteering on local boards of health or within community service organizations
  • Serve on national, state, or local dental boards
  • Join or be elected to ADA Committees, Councils and Board of Trustees to help enhance access to care for underserved patients.
  • Sponsoring dental care education programs with local schools or colleges
  • Participate in ADA endorsed dental care events that treat underserved patients such as Give Kids a Smile, Mission of Mercy (MOM), and other programs
  • Consider treating underserved patients on a sliding-scale or at no cost to the patient

Furthermore, the AAE expresses the duty health care providers to collaborate with patients, other care providers, and community partners to support accessible care in any way possible, larger or small. Get involved in this important initiative. Doctors can work individually, in collaboration with other dentists or specialists, or as a partner in the greater community. In any case, every effort makes a difference and helps one more person access quality dental care to improve their health and well-being.
